Doctors Without Borders and the Nobel Peace Prize

Educated as an attorney in Australia and based in Tiburon, California, Graham R. Taylor is an advisor and investor for several international corporations and startups. On top of his professional work, Graham R. Taylor supports a number of charities, including the Nobel Peace Prize recipient Doctors Without Borders.

Founded in France as Medecins Sans Frontieres, Doctors Without Borders is an international humanitarian aid organization that consists of volunteer doctors and allied health professionals providing needed medical help in war-torn regions and in countries with endemic diseases.

To recognize the organization for its noteworthy cause and its provision of humanitarian aid spanning several continents, Doctors Without Borders was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1999. The award was received by then organization president Dr. James Orbinski, who used the acceptance speech as an opportunity to deliver a message to then Russian president Boris Yeltsin amidst a worldwide outcry against human rights violations in Chechnya.

In the same speech, Dr. Orbinski acknowledged that despite the power of humanitarianism, it also has its limitations. He was quoted saying, "No doctor can stop a genocide. … And no humanitarian can make peace. These are political responsibilities, not humanitarian imperatives."
